Senior Director of Prevention

Vice President of Patient Services and Kidney Disease Education Programs

Position Summary:

The position of Senior Director of Prevention is a new position instituted to take AKF to the next level of impacting healthcare outcomes by reducing the burden of chronic kidney disease across all communities, including those most affected such as ethnic minorities and family members of current patients. The successful candidate will oversee AKF’s prevention programs by helping to develop and execute AKF’s Strategic Action Plan, focusing on integrated prevention strategies. They will oversee operational implementation for the Professional and Public Education initiatives. The Senior Director will also be involved in community based participatory research (CBPR) by building national and regional partnerships including networking with federal community health centers and expanding to new areas of the country. The process will involve implementing and designing community based educational interventions. This work entails an ongoing assessment of needs and refining and evaluating new and existing programs to enhance and expand stakeholder services.

Position Overview

The Senior Director’s major responsibilities include the following:

1) Prevention Health Education
Primary Responsibilities:
• Develop and execute AKF’s Strategic Action Plan including supervising the operational implementation for Educational Program initiatives.
• Assist the VP in the development of a three year prevention strategy for AKF programs.
• Supervise staff in the national office while working collaboratively with other AKF offices and divisions, including the Education Programs.
• Serve as a resource to the Communications and Marketing Office for promotional goals.
• Serve as a resource to Development Office for fundraising goals.
• Prepare and manage budgets for Patient Service and Kidney Disease Education Program under this division.

2) Community Health Based Education
Primary Responsibilities:
• Help bring AKF to the next level in development of cultural competency health education program design, implementation and delivery.
• Share knowledge of health communication strategies.
• Communicate knowledge about health disparities in renal disease or in general.
• Bring media experience and communicate health messages to foster behavioral changes.
• Provide experience with National Association of Community Health Centers.
• Improve AKF relationships with federal (i.e. NIH, CDC, HRSA, AHRQ, HHS) programs oriented toward community public health intervention programs.
• Share knowledge of government health education programs including city and county public health departments and federal partners.

3) Public and Professional Education – AKF educates directly approximately 1,000 health professionals annually through conferences, symposia, on-line courses, and national exhibits.  AKF also produces a semi-annual Professional Advocate newsletter that reaches close to 20,000 renal professionals.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Supervise the education team in the conceptualization, design, implementation, operations and evaluations of Diverse AKF health education programs for those at risk of kidney disease, for renal professionals and end-stage renal disease population.
• Evaluate and enhance the HelpLine program services and efficiency.
• Supervise a needs assessment and analysis of existing educational brochures to determine priorities.
• Provide oversight to the content and direction of the Professional Advocate Newsletter.
• Provide oversight in the selection of regional conference series topics, locations and AKF exhibit venues.
• Foster innovative thinking and proactive scanning for opportunities to introduce new and enhanced educational products that can also attract corporate support.

4) Minority Intervention and Kidney Education (MIKE) Program - Partners with government agencies, community, health and faith-based organizations in Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. to provide patient education, screenings and follow-up services for people who are at highest risk for kidney disease. In 2008, this six year program will provide outreach education and services to approximately 6,000 individuals.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Directly supervise the Director of Minority Health; maintain timelines and establish program priorities and evaluate opportunities for program expansion.
• Serve as a member of the American Kidney Fund’s Leadership Team.
• Collaborate with the Director of Education in the development of program materials.
• Work in collaboration with the VP of Patient Services/Kidney Disease Education, provide programmatic vision and direct overall strategic direction of prevention activities.
           
5) Patient Advocacy - This role encompasses consultation on programs development, public policy and special projects; representation on kidney community action committees and liaison to health and regulatory agencies such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Center for Disease Control. 
Primary Responsibilities:
• Oversee the successful rollout and appropriate utilization of the newsletter and Education brochures.
• Oversee the development of 2010 goals and prevention strategy action plans.
 
6) Other Major Responsibilities
• As a member of the senior team, this person will participate in the general management of their department. They will prepare and deliver written and verbal reports to internal and external constituents. These reports will include analyses, position papers, recommendations and talking points. 
• They will accompany the Vice President in presentations to corporate sponsors, prospective funders, etc.
• Completes special projects and assignments as requested by the Vice President and CEO.
• Travel as necessary.

Experience:
• Strong prevention background,  3 – 5 years minimum,  within a chronic disease state.
• A minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in managing teams and overseeing multifaceted programs development and delivery with demonstrated success.
• Direct documented and proven experience with developing and implementing education and prevention programs for a health charity.
• Clinical experience as an RN or within Public Health a plus.
• Understanding of U.S. health care system and reimbursement policies, particularly Medicare.
• Strong supervisory experience working in a rapidly growing, dynamic organization.
• Direct experience developing and implementing a programmatic strategic plan and research projects.
• An organized and strategic approach to managing multiple new and ongoing programs.
• Demonstrated success in attracting and sustaining sponsorship support and building community partnerships.
• Leadership and strategic qualities to develop and manage employees and to direct day-to-day activities and operations.
• Experience supervising, coaching and building an effective Programs team.
• Experience developing solid working relationships.
• Demonstrated experience in developing and managing budgets; computer literate and experienced with applying IT solutions to improve programs delivery.
• A track record as an effective communicator who is articulate and persuasive in written and verbal communications; adept at describing AKF programs and their benefits to stakeholders and making presentations to a variety of audiences.
• Must be able to work independently in a changing environment, meet tight deadlines, multi-task, achieve metric-driven goals, and empower others by example, and
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university required. Advanced degree and background in clinical or public health is preferred RN, Ph.D. or M.P.H.
