Alan B. Leichtman, M.D.

Dr. Alan Leichtman is a member of the American Kidney Fund Board of Trustees and serves on the Medical Advisory and Kidney Disease Prevention, Education & Outreach Committees.

Dr. Leichtman is a professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology of the University of Michigan and associate director of the University of Michigan Transplant Center. He has served as the primary physician for the University of Michigan’s kidney and pancreas transplantation programs since 1989 and was the medical director from 1989 through 2005.

He is a board member, a member of the governance committee, and a member of the abdominal organ committee of Gift of Life Michigan, the state's organ procurement organization. He has previously served Gift of Life Michigan as its treasurer and as chair of its finance and audit committee, and through membership on its executive, long-range planning, by-laws, scientific studies, renal transplant and building committees. Dr. Leichtman is also a board member of the Gift of Life Foundation, and a past president and board member of the Great Lakes Transplantation Society.

Nationally, he is a member of the board of directors of the national U.S. Organ and Transplantation Alliance, the National Kidney Foundation’s End-The-Wait task force, the American Society of Nephrology’s transplant advisory committee, and the Alliance for Paired Donation’s scientific operations committee. He currently serves as a co-principal investigator for the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) and as the associate director of the data coordinating center for the RELIVE Study, a National Institutes of Health-sponsored, multi-center epidemiological investigation of living lung and living kidney donor outcomes. He is a previous chair of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network’s (OPTN/UNOS) kidney and pancreas transplantation committee, the American Society of Transplantation’s patient care and education committee, and a previous member of the OPTN/UNOS membership and professional standards committee, and the American Society of Transplantation scientific studies committee. He represents the SRTR on the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Transplantation (ACOT), and on the OPTN/UNOS histocompatibility committee, kidney and pancreas transplantation committee, minority affairs committee, policy oversight committee, board of directors and executive committee.
