Alfreda Bradley-Coar


Alfreda Bradley-Coar has a 20+ year legal career with expertise in law department management, leadership, strategy, complex transactions, compliance, and corporate governance.  She has built a track record of leading in regulated environments, building high-performance teams and providing thought leadership.  During her 17-year tenure in-house at GE, she has held various leadership roles within the legal function for four businesses in a variety of industries: health care, transportation, insurance and financial services. 

Ms. Bradley-Coar is currently General Counsel of GE Healthcare, Americas, an $8B dollar global health care division of General Electric Company, which manufactures the latest technologies in medical device, software and pharmaceutical products.  As General Counsel, Ms. Bradley-Coar is responsible for leading the legal department and managing the enterprise-wide risks of the business.  Her responsibilities include advising the CEO and senior executives on commercial, litigation, regulatory, compliance, and transactional matters. Ms. Bradley-Coar is also a member of GE’s Legal Corporate Executive Council, a senior advisory board that develops and drives the global legal strategy for General Electric Company.

Prior to joining GE Healthcare, Ms. Bradley-Coar served as General Counsel for the GE Trailer Fleet business where she led the department’s global legal, contracts and licensing functions responsible for $2B in equipment leasing transactions.  As global regulatory counsel for GE Insurance, a $10B reinsurance company, she managed three departments (legal, corporate licensing, rate negotiation/filing) and set regulatory direction for five business units on underwriting, claims handling, market conduct and reserving requirements.  At GE Railcar Corp, Bradley-Coar focused on complex commercial transactions, including business and portfolio acquisitions, divestitures, syndications and equipment financings for the $100MM global industrial railcar finance and leasing company.  She served as lead counsel for the European operations responsible for conducting market entry analysis of the U.K. passenger car market, developing master commercial agreements for the U.K., France and Germany operations, and monitoring adherence to U.K. Competition laws. 

Prior to GE, Ms. Bradley-Coar specialized in creditors’ rights, bankruptcy and corporate reorganizations with two national law firms,  Bell, Boyd & Lloyd and Seyfarth, Shaw & Geraldson, and was a judicial law clerk in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. 

Ms. Bradley-Coar earned her B.A., cum laude, and J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University, Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

She has provided thought leadership for companies in a wide range of industries, and has extensive leadership, strategy, transactional and risk management experience.  She has been a speaker on a wide range of topics including the role of corporate counsel, risk management and compliance, and diversity in the legal profession.  She is involved in numerous boards and organizations and has received many civic and professional awards and honors for outstanding leadership and service.  Ms. Bradley-Coar is married to Retired Federal District Court Judge David H. Coar and resides in Chicago.
