Matthew Poffenroth, M.D., MBA

Matthew Poffenroth, M.D., MBA, received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1994, and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at York Hospital in York, Pa.,  in 1999. Dr. Poffenroth was the founder and president of a 40-physician hospitalist group in Montgomery County, Md., from 2003 to 2007, during which time he also received his MBA from Johns Hopkins University. In 2007, Dr. Poffenroth joined Suburban Hospital Health System in Bethesda, Md., as President of Premier Physician Group. In 2009, when Suburban Hospital was acquired by Johns Hopkins Health System, Dr. Poffenroth joined Johns Hopkins Community Physicians as Regional Medical Director. Currently, he serves as Chief of Medical Specialties and Director of Clinical Integration for JHCP, and Medical Director for the Johns Hopkins Medicine Alliance for Patients, and Accountable Care Organization.

Dr. Poffenroth’s career has focused on leading and aligning physicians toward a common goal of providing high-quality care within an integrated delivery system. As a primary care physician, one of his primary goals has been to help patients prevent and manage the common chronic diseases that can lead to kidney failure (diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease). Dr. Poffenroth joins the AKF Board with the hope of helping the AKF educate the public about the risk of kidney disease, the impact kidney failure can have on quality of life, and the importance of prevention through chronic disease management and promotion of healthy lifestyles.
