AKF Advocate: Lana Schmidt

Lana Schmidt

Lana is committed to increasing public awareness of kidney disease and helping others access the information they need for quality health care.

Lana co-leads a local kidney group that works to educate kidney patients about their treatment options. Lana’s passion for this work comes from a personal experience: When peritoneal dialysis (PD) stopped working for her in 2010, she was completely unaware of her options.

In order to save her own life, Lana researched and implemented a home hemodialysis treatment but found she needed help. With skilled help not readily available, she connected with a program in Illinois and began training nursing students to assist her with home hemodialysis. Today, she trains 4-5 students at a time. Lana’s efforts to train nursing students not only teaches them a specialized skill, but also instills the value of quality care for kidney patients—a key priority for AKF.

Lana stays involved with AKF’s Advocacy Network through our online communications and she promotes kidney awareness when speaking at conferences around the country. Lana participated in the American Kidney Fund’s 2012 Kidney Action Day on the Hill, meeting with members of Congress to advocate for policies that affect kidney patient care. She sits on advisory committees, meets with medical professionals and continues to work with lawmakers to raise awareness of kidney disease. Lana has published articles on the benefits of home hemodialysis in national media outlets. Her continual outreach shows a true commitment to advocacy for kidney patients. AKF salutes Lana for her dedication and effective advocacy work.
