AKF Co-Hosts Welcome Reception for Congressional Kidney Caucus
On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, the American Kidney Fund joined with its partners in the kidney care community to host a reception on Capitol Hill in honor of the Congressional Kidney Caucus in the 113th Congress. The event welcomed new Kidney Caucus members and thanked Co-Chairs Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) and Rep. Tom Marino (R-PA)—pictured here delivering remarks in 2011 at AKF’s annual gala, The Hope Affair—for their leadership.

AKF Hosts Kidney Action Day on the Hill
On Thursday, March 7, 2013, the American Kidney Fund teamed up with the Congressional Kidney Caucus to host Kidney Action Day on the Hill—AKF’s annual kidney health screening event on Capitol Hill during National Kidney Month. The event also featured kidney health education, virtual fitness activities and remarks from AKF President and CEO LaVarne Burton (pictured) and AKF Advocates.

AKF Advocates Share Their Stories on Capitol Hill
On Wednesday, March 6 and Thursday, March 7, 2013, AKF hosted 10 Advocates in Washington, D.C., for advocacy training and meetings with their Congressional offices. During their meetings on Capitol Hill, Advocates raised awareness of kidney disease by sharing their stories, and urged support for federal policies and legislation that can benefit kidney patients and their families.

Local Officials Turn Out for Kidney Action Day in Atlanta
On Saturday, October 27, 2012 the American Kidney Fund hosted Kidney Action Day at Grady High School to raise awareness of kidney disease in the City of Atlanta. Councilmember Aaron Watson (pictured) presented a Proclamation on behalf of the Atlanta City Council recognizing October 27th as Kidney Action Day in the City of Atlanta. State Senator Nan Orrock (D-36) also attended and delivered brief remarks.

Advocate Named 2012 Hero of Hope
On October 17, 2012, the American Kidney Fund honored Eric Dolby as the 2012 Hero of Hope at its annual gala, The Hope Affair. The Hero of Hope award is presented each year to a current or former dialysis patient who inspires those around them with their unflagging spirit of caring and determination and giving back to their communities. An Advocate since 2010, Eric came to Washington, D.C. in 2011 for the AKF Advocate Fly-In, sharing his inspirational story to help raise awareness of kidney disease on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Pairs Up with AKF at Houston Kidney Action Day
On Sunday, October 14, 2012, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) joined the American Kidney Fund at Kidney Action Day to raise awareness of kidney disease in Houston. She delivered remarks and took part in the day’s fitness activities and the Kidney Action Day Walk. A representative from the Houston Department of Health and Human Services also joined AKF to present a Proclamation on behalf of Mayor Annise Parker, recognizing October 14th as Kidney Action Day in the City of Houston. City of San Antonio Supports Kidney Action Day
Dr. Thomas Schlenker, Director of Public Health for the City of San Antonio, joined the American Kidney Fund on Saturday, October 6, 2012 to present a Proclamation on behalf of Mayor Julian Castro, declaring October 6th to be Kidney Action Day in the City of San Antonio. Hundreds of local residents turned out to take part in free kidney health screenings, a fundraising walk, and other fun activities for the whole family. Watch a slideshow of the event.

Rep. Donna Edwards Helps AKF Kick Off Fall Kidney Action Days
On Saturday, September 8, 2012, Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) joined the American Kidney Fund at Kidney Action Day in Landover, Maryland to raise awareness of kidney disease in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. AKF Co-Hosts Congressional Briefing on Kidney Disease Research
On June 19, 2012 the American Kidney Fund partnered with the American Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and the Congressional Kidney Caucus to host a briefing on Capitol Hill on the importance of federally-funded kidney disease research. The briefing featured remarks from AKF President and CEO LaVarne Burton, Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and other national health leaders. AKF Advocate Greg Smith of Maryland also participated in the event.

Chicago Officials Turn Out for Kidney Action Day
Federal, state and local officials joined the American Kidney Fund at Kidney Action Day on May 12, 2012 at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (pictured) recognized one of his constituents whose artwork is featured in AKF's 2012 calendar. State Rep. Monique Davis and Alderman Howard Brookins, Jr. stressed the importance of kidney disease awareness, and Public Health Commissioner Dr. Bechara Choucair presented a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, declaring May 12, 2012 to be Kidney Action Day in the City of Chicago.Watch a slideshow of the event!
