AKF Hosts Kidney Action Day
on the Hill

On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, the American Kidney Fund teamed up with the Congressional Kidney Caucus to host Kidney Action Day on the Hill—AKF’s annual kidney health screening event on Capitol Hill during National Kidney Month.  The event also featured kidney health education, fitness activities and remarks from Congressional Kidney Caucus co-chairs Tom Marino (R, Pa.) (pictured on right) and Jim McDermott (D, Wash.) (pictured on left), Rep. Marcia Fudge (D, Ohio), AKF Advocate Anthony Brown, and AKF President and CEO LaVarne Burton.  Watch a slideshow of the event.

AKF Advocates Share Their Stories on Capitol Hill

Ten AKF Advocates came to Washington, D.C., in early March for advocacy training and meetings with their Congressional offices.  During their meetings on Capitol Hill, Advocates raised awareness of kidney disease by sharing their stories, and urged support for federal policies and legislation that can benefit kidney patients and their families.

Last November, the American Kidney Fund hosted Kidney Action Day to raise awareness of kidney disease in Houston. Advocate Named 2013 Hero of Hope

On October 29, 2013, the American Kidney Fund honored NeShell Monroe as the 2013 Hero of Hope at its annual gala, The Hope Affair.  The Hero of Hope award is presented each year to a current or former dialysis patient who inspires those around them with their unflagging spirit of caring and determination and giving back to their communities.  NeShell works tirelessly to encourage and empower other patients at her dialysis facility to care for themselves and to live their lives to the fullest. She reaches out to the community at local health events and through the media to educate people about kidney disease and its leading causes, the importance of early detection, and how to prevent kidney disease.
