The American Kidney Fund’s annual national gala, The Hope Affair, was held October 25, 2011 in Washington, D.C.

2011 The Hope Affair Honorees
 

Last year's event celebrated the American Kidney Fund's 40th anniversary and honored some very special people: Nephrologist of the Year Glenn M. Chertow, Hero of Hope Corey S. Furman, Caregiver of the Year Bernice Strange, and our 2012 Calendar Kids cover artist Danielle Long. Special guests included the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Kidney Caucus, Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington and Rep. Jim Marino of Pennsylvania; several other members of Congress; and AKF's celebrity health champion, Laila Ali. AKF gratefully acknowledges the support of all of our sponsors.

2011 Nephrologist of the Year: Glenn M. Chertow, M.D., M.P.H.

Nephrologist of the Year Glenn M. Chertow

Dr. Chertow is Professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of Nephrology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Prior to joining the faculty at Standford, Dr. Chertow served with distinction on the faculties at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School (1995-98) and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) (1998-2007). He was the 1993-95 American Kidney Fund-Amgen Clinical Scholar in Nephrology. Dr. Chertow has established a successful career as a clinical investigator and continues to maintain a productive research program focused on improving care for persons with acute and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Dr. Chertow was elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation in 2004 and appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation in 2007. He was Vice Chair and member of two workgroups for the Kidney Disease Quality Outcomes Initiative (K/DOQI) and Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. He is one of five Co-Editors of the 9th edition of Brenner & Rector's The Kidney. Dr. Chertow has mentored more than 30 postdoctoral fellows, many of whom remain in leadership positions in academic medicine. Dr. Chertow received the 2007 National Torchbearer Award from teh American Kidney Fund for his career-long contributions toward improving the lives of persons with kidney disease.
