AKF Clinical Scholars Present at American Society of Nephrology Meeting

ROCKVILLE, MD — The American Kidney Fund is pleased to announce that two of its Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellows, Tammy Brady, MD, and Orlando M. Gutierrez, MD, will be presenters at the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) meeting this year.
 
On Sunday, November 4, 2007 at 10:00 AM, Dr. Brady will present on "Patient, Clinic and Provider Predictors of Unrecognized High Blood Pressure in Children." Dr. Brady, of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has a strong interest in the prevention of hypertension and renal disease in children.
 
Dr. Brady was awarded the American Kidney Fund-Amgen Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship in 2006. In 2003 she was appointed Chief Resident, Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in Bronx, NY. She became a Fellow, Pediatric Nephrology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore in 2004. Dr. Brady received her Masters in Health Science in Clinical Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. Recently, an abstract presented at the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology based on Dr. Brady’s research to date received the Trainee Research Award for Best Clinical Abstract.
 
Dr. Gutierrez, of Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will be presenting twice during the ASN meeting. On Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 10:00 AM, Dr. Gutierrez will present on "Racial Differences in the Prevalence of Disordered Mineral Metabolism in Chronic Kidney Disease." On Sunday, November 4, 2007 at 2:42 PM, he will give a presentation on "Early Mortality after Initiating Chronic Hemodialysis: A U.S. Prospective Study of 10,000 Patients." Dr. Gutierrez is interested in mineral metabolism disorders in patients with chronic kidney disease.
 
Dr. Gutierrez was awarded the American Kidney Fund-Genzyme Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship in 2006. In 2005, Dr. Gutierrez received the first place Massachusetts General Hospital abstract. He was recognized as the most promising graduate in 2002 as he earned the Medical College of Ohio Dean’s Award. Dr. Gutierrez will pursue further studies in basic epidemiology and biostatistics in the Scholar in Clinical Science Program at the Harvard School of Public Health.
 
The goal of the American Kidney Fund’s CSN Program is to improve the quality of care provided to kidney patients and to promote clinical research in nephrology. This goal is achieved by enhancing the training of nephrologists who desire to pursue an academic career and whose primary professional commitment is to scholarship in the provision of patient care. Awardees conduct prevention and outcomes research and receive advanced training in essential skills such as medical ethics, biostatistics and epidemiology.
