Research Topic: The Association Between Vitamin D and Physiologic Measures of Cardiovascular Disease in Hemodialysis Patients
The American Kidney Fund is delighted to award the 2006 American Kidney Fund–GENZYME Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship to Dr. Orlando Gutierrez of Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital. Through the Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Program, AKF encourages promising young nephrologists to pursue careers in academic medicine and improve the quality of care of renal patients. AKF's Clinical Scientists receive advanced training in public health while they pursue prevention and outcomes research.
Dr. Gutierrez has a strong interest in mineral metabolism disorders in patients with chronic kidney disease. Dr. Gutierrez's research while a Clinical Fellow of AKF will focus on the association between vitamin D and physiologic measures of cardiovascular disease in hemodialysis patients. The study will determine if treatment with ergocalciferol, active vitamin D, or both ultimately result in decreased mortality.
Dr. Gutierrez exemplifies the qualities that AKF seeks for its Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship. In 2005, he received the first place Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Residency Research Award as well as the MGH Clinical Research Award for outstanding abstract. He was recognized as the most promising graduate in 2002 as he received the Medical College of Ohio Dean's Award. Dr. Gutierrez will pursue further studies in basic epidemiology and biostatics in the Scholar in Clinical Science Program at the Harvard School of Public Health. |
