What is the Virtual Walk?

The Virtual Walk is a fun way to help raise funds for the fight against kidney disease. It can take place anytime, anywhere. You may choose to walk around your community, in a local park, indoors at a mall or not walk at all! No matter which option you choose, you are helping to raise money for essential programs and services that help 1 out of every 5 dialysis patients in the United States and the millions of people who are at risk for kidney disease. ! Your Virtual Walk is a reflection of you, and is as personal as your reasons for joining the fight to prevent kidney disease.

How long is the walk?

If you choose to make your Virtual Walk a real walk, it can be short- or long-distance, depending on your comfort and fitness level. If you are a runner, you can designate an upcoming race to be your Virtual Walk and ask friends and family to support you. You can also choose to not walk at all and simply help raise money to support patients in need and protect millions at risk. Looking for some ideas for how to make your Virtual Walk fun? Do I have to walk?

No! The Virtual Walk is primarily about helping the American Kidney Fund increase awareness of kidney disease and raise money for its programs and services that help kidney patients in need and help protect millions from kidney disease. Walking is optional!

Does it cost anything to register?

No. There is no registration fee for the Virtual Walk, but if you raise or donate a minimum of $50, we will send you a Virtual Walk t-shirt. We encourage you to ask your family, friends and co-workers for financial donations to show their support.

Do you accept matching gifts?

Yes! We encourage you to see if your company will match any gift you make. Simply click here to find your company. If your company does not show up in the search, you may still have a matching program. Contact your HR department to find out.

Is there a minimum age requirement to participate in the Virtual Walk?

No, there is no age requirement to participate in the Virtual Walk. Make it a family affair!

How do I register for the walk?

Registering for the Virtual Walk is quick, easy and can be done from the comfort of your home in two easy steps!
  1. First, be prepared to decide: Will you be participating as a member of a Team or as an Individual Walker?
  2. Then follow the online registration steps to become an official participant of the Virtual Walk.

How do I get a t-shirt?

Virtual Walk participants who donate or raise $50 or more online will receive a t-shirt.

What if someone wants to sponsor me, but doesn't want to contribute online?

You may collect donations in person and mail them to the American Kidney Fund (though it is much easier for people to donate online). Just follow these steps:
  1. Print out the donation form (pdf) and ask your sponsors to complete it. They may give cash, credit card or check—but we ask that you NOT mail cash. Checks should be made payable to "American Kidney Fund."
  2. You can mail the donation form to the American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852.

What is a team captain?

A team captain organizes and motivates a group of people to participate together in the Virtual Walk. Team captains are responsible for recruiting people to join their team, naming their team, setting a team fundraising goal, and communicating with and encouraging their team members. Being a team captain is an important and rewarding task. By Pairing Up with family, friends and co-workers to join your team, you are increasing awareness and supporting programs that will help kidney patients who depend on the American Kidney Fund.

May I participate as an individual?

Yes, you may register as an individual walker or you may choose to join a team that is looking for more members.

What if I forgot my username or password?

Remember that your username and password are case-sensitive. Click here to get your password. You will receive an email with your username and password.

How do I change my username and/or password?

First, log in to the site using your username and password. Once logged in you will see a link at the top of the page called "Update My Profile." Once in your profile, you will be able to update your contact information, email address, preferences, username and password. All changes will be made to your account immediately.
