Right now, Senators in Michigan are considering Senate Bill 584. This important legislation would prevent insurance companies from discriminating against living organ donors by charging higher premiums or refusing to insure them altogether. A kidney transplant is a literal lifeline for patients suffering from kidney failure, offering the chance for a longer, healthier life. But the severe shortage of available organs from deceased donors in the United States means over 4,000 Michigan residents must wait for someone to die to get a kidney, unless they can find a living donor. In 2020, living donors accounted for only about 1 in 4 of Michigan's 505 kidney transplants. Providing incentives and removing financial burdens for living donors can lead to an increase in organ donations. Please ask your state senator to vote YES on SB 584!
