What is the current status of AB 290?
- AKF filed a federal lawsuit challenging AB 290 in November. On Dec. 30, a federal judge issued an emergency injunction preventing AB 290 from becoming law. This means AKF can resume our HIPP program in California while the law is on hold.
Is AKF grant assistance available to all patients in California now?
- Yes. With this emergency injunction AKF is able to keep HIPP open for all patients in California who cannot afford the cost of their health insurance premiums. We have resumed accepting applications from new applicants and sending out grant assistance to our existing program enrollees.
Does the injunction overturn AB 290?
- No. The injunction is an important first step in our legal challenge to AB 290. The injunction is an emergency measure that prevents AB 290 from becoming law on January 1, 2020 pending a trial on the merits of our case. A trial has not yet been scheduled.
- This injunction is a huge step in the right direction but not the last step. While the law is on hold, we are able to continue HIPP assistance in California for all patients.
