Fabry disease is caused by a gene mutation, and is passed down by parents to their children. With Fabry disease, there is a buildup of fat that causes your body’s cells to not work as they should. This fat buildup causes the kidneys, as well as the skin, eyes, heart, brain, digestive, and nervous system to not work well. Fabry disease can lead to stroke, heart attack, and damage to the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys. The kidney damage caused by Fabry’s disease can lead to kidney failure over time. There is no cure for Fabry disease but there are FDA approved treatments as well as medicines that can help keep the disease under control and protect your kidneys.
