4 stars from Charity Navigator—again!
For the 16th year in a row, the American Kidney Fund has received the highest possible rating—four stars—from Charity Navigator, the gold standard in providing donors with essential information to give them greater confidence in the charitable choices they make.
Charity Navigator’s rating puts us at #3 in its Top 10 list of Charities with the Most Consecutive 4-Star Ratings—the only health charity to make the Top 10.
Here’s what Charity Navigator says about the charities on that list: “Charities tackle some of society’s most complex and intractable issues—such as combating hunger, preserving the environment, curing diseases and changing people’s perceptions. These are long-term objectives. To be successful, organizations must be high performers consistently, year after year. These ten charities have earned the most consecutive 4-star ratings demonstrating an ongoing fiscal excellence. They are well-positioned to pursue and achieve long-term change.”
We know the fight against kidney disease is a long-term battle, and we have been fighting it tirelessly since 1971. We’re best known for the treatment-related, need-based financial support we provide to 1 in every 5 U.S. dialysis patients, but we believe that to effectively help people fight kidney disease, we must help them at every stage in their journey with this condition. That’s why we have a comprehensive nationwide kidney disease screening program, Know Your Kidneys; it’s why we have built one of the largest digital platforms dedicated to kidney disease education; and it’s why we continue to innovate with programs such as patient-centered webinars and the peer education program Kidney Health Coach. We want to help kidney patients live their best lives, so we fund clinical research and provide continuing education courses free of charge to allied health professionals. We believe in the power of public policy to make life better for patients, which is why we have a nationwide patient Advocacy Network and engage with policymakers at the federal and state level.
And we do all of that while spending 97 cents of every donated dollar on patients and programs.
Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These Accountability & Transparency metrics account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, revealing which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders. Additional enhancements in 2016 further substantiate the financial health of Charity Navigator’s four star charities.
“The American Kidney Fund’s exceptional 4-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” said Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating. This adds AKF to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support the American Kidney Fund.”
Our Charity Navigator rating comes on the heels of our achieving the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar, the world’s largest source of information about nonprofits.
These independent evaluations give our donors confidence that AKF puts every donated dollar into work that really matters to people who are living with kidney disease, as well as those who are at risk.
