Amended version of SB 1156 passed by California Assembly Health Committee

The amended version of SB 1156 that passed the California Assembly Health Committee removed harmful provisions of the bill that would have caused dialysis and kidney transplant patients to lose their health insurance or be forced into public programs. When patients are threatened in any way, AKF will step in to protect them. Patients, social workers, and many advocacy groups mobilized on SB1156, and we are extremely grateful to the Committee for significantly amending the bill to address patient concerns. At the same time, we have serious concerns about this bill because of unintended consequences it may have for patients’ access to dialysis care, particularly in urban and rural parts of the state, and it is imperative that the Assembly carefully analyze the potential ramifications of this bill before it comes to the Assembly floor.
