Help us END discrimination for organ donors in Indiana (SB 41/HB 1390)

Email your lawmakers

Danny, a UAW member and advocate from Fairland, has been dealing with kidney disease since 2012. After getting the diagnosis from his doctor, he made all of the health changes he was told could help him delay dialysis. But in 2023, he entered end stage renal disease (ESRD) and his life changed dramatically. He is on dialysis four times a day, seven days a week and lives his life in four-hour blocks.

Danny spends every day spreading the word about kidney disease and trying to find a potential living donor match.

Every day, we lose 13 members of the kidney disease community who are waiting for a kidney transplant. There are 14,682 Hoosiers who are experiencing kidney failure. In 2020, 2,465 new cases of kidney failure were diagnosed in Indiana and only 76 were able to get a transplant.

We need to do better.

Email your legislators and ask them to support SB 41 and become co-sponsors. Indiana currently has a D on our Living Donor Protection Report Card. Enaction of this bill will improve the state's grade immediately.

Passing this bill is one of AKF's top priorities. This bill will prevent Indiana's life, disability and long-term care insurers from discriminating against living kidney donors. It will prohibit them from declining coverage or charging higher premiums based on someone's status as a living organ donor.
