More often than not your vehicle is a lifeline that gets you where you need to go, whether that be work, the grocery store or a child’s soccer game. But, like most possessions, they eventually age, break down, become too small for a growing family or just don’t fit your lifestyle anymore. When this happens, we invite you to donate your vehicle to AKF and let your old lifeline become the lifeline for a kidney patient. Let your old car, truck, RV or even boat be the reason someone with kidney disease can keep his or her insurance and continue to live a full life. Your car can be a vehicle of change for countless kidney patients.

Frequently asked questions

Is my donation tax-deductible?

The American Kidney Fund is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Your vehicle donation will qualify as a tax deduction if your tax status allows. Please check with your tax advisor to determine your tax benefit.

How does my tax deduction work?

The IRS allows you, the taxpayer, to claim a tax deduction of the value of your vehicle up to $500. Once the vehicle is sold, if the actual sale value exceeds $500, Car Program, Inc., will mail you a 1098-C form within 30 days of the sale. The sale is generally complete around 60 days after the vehicle donation, so the 1098-C would arrive no earlier than 90 days after you donate your vehicle. Please see IRS Publication 4303, A Donor's Guide to Vehicle Donations, for information on how to determine the fair market value of a donated vehicle for which no 1098-C form is issued.

How long will it take to get a tax receipt?

Upon picking up your vehicle, the tow truck driver will leave with you a blank receipt on which you can claim a value up to $500. The sale is generally complete around 60 days after the vehicle donation, so if your vehicle sells for more than $500, the 1098-C would arrive no earlier than 90 days after you donate the vehicle.

What do I need to do to donate my vehicle?

Please provide the vehicle title if available. If you do not have the title, tell Car Program, Inc. why and they can make other arrangements in most instances.

My car hasn't run in years. Can I still donate it?

Yes, Car Program, Inc. is able to accept most vehicles whether they run or not. However, the condition of your vehicle will affect the fair market value of your donation.

In what states can you pick up vehicles?

Most vehicles can be picked up throughout the continental U.S. and Hawaii.

How will my car be picked up?

Car Program, Inc. will arrange to have your vehicle towed at a scheduled time convenient to you.

How long will it take to pick up my car?

Your car normally can be picked up within a few days if you fill out a donation form online. If you need your car picked up sooner, you may call Car Donation, Inc. before 2 p.m. Pacific Time to arrange a next-day pickup.

What do I do with the license plates if I decide to donate?

Remove any license plates (tags) before the vehicle is towed. Check with your local motor vehicle administration for more details.
