Statement from the American Kidney Fund on the United States Preventive Services Task Force

ROCKVILLE, Md. (July 31, 2025) — LaVarne A. Burton, President and CEO of the American Kidney Fund (AKF), issued the following statement:

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) plays a vital role in the health of all Americans. Collectively we rely on this group of independent scientific and clinical experts to make evidence-based recommendations about preventive screenings that have shaped and improved health outcomes for millions of people. Importantly, these recommendations also help ensure access to preventive services without cost-sharing.

We are deeply concerned about reports that plans may be underway to dismiss members of the USPSTF, which is charged with making critical recommendations on disease prevention. In January 2023, USPSTF published its draft research plan with key questions to consider as it decides whether to update its position on chronic kidney disease (CKD) screening. Along with other kidney community stakeholders, the American Kidney Fund submitted comments in support of much needed CKD screening recommendations that would undoubtedly save many lives. We have been waiting for draft recommendations since the final research plan was published in July 2023. We hope that work on this topic will continue and be addressed with urgency and care.
