Kidney transplant is considered the best treatment option for people facing kidney failure. But preparing for a kidney transplant is a lot of work. You have to choose a transplant center (or centers), have a complete health evaluation by doctors, and find a kidney donor match, and/or join the kidney transplant waiting list. All of this takes time, effort, and lots of planning. In recognition of Donate Life Month, our April webinar will shine light on this important topic. Our speakers will walk us through the steps it takes to have a successful kidney transplant.

Macey Henderson, JD, PhD

Macey Henderson, JD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Nursing at Johns Hopkins University. Her background in law, ethics, health policy and management support her research into the health outcomes of living kidney donors and transplant patients. She draws on the areas of health information technology, clinical informatics, media, communications, and implementation science to drive innovation and new technology to improve the lives of transplant patients and live donors. As a national expert in organ transplant policy and through her dedication and service to the national organ transplant network, Dr. Henderson actively develops policy and guidance related to the donation and transplantation of organs from living donors to recipients in the U.S. and serves on the Board of Directors at the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network / United Network for Organ Sharing.

Dr. Henderson is currently funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to study living kidney donor outcomes, and is a recipient of the Rothman Early Career Development Award for Surgical Research to develop technological innovations in live kidney donor post-donation care management. Dr. Henderson recently received a Faculty Development Award from the Johns Hopkins Center for AIDS Research (Hopkins CFAR) to lead a team to develop and implement informed consent processes for HIV+ living donor candidates under HOPE Act research protocols. She is also the principle of Kidney Space—a Facebook integrated health app designed to help patients and families learn about kidney disease and transplantation.

Dr. Fizza Naqvi

Dr. Fizza Naqvi

Fizza Naqvi, MBBS, MD, is an assistant professor and clinical instructor at the Department of Medicine (Nephrology), Johns Hopkins. Dr. Naqvi is also an attending physician at several clinics and responsible for the evaluation of patients, and selection for kidney transplant.

Some of her accomplishments include taking lead in quality improvement of the clinical environment process, and information flow. Dr. Naqvi is involved in the development of nursing leadership and education. She set up monthly teaching and educational sessions for transplant coordinators about the basic principles of kidney transplantation. Dr. Naqvi aided in the establishment of a Transplant Clinic in Bethesda, MD allowing for the evaluation of potential kidney transplant recipients from the DC/VA regions. This has contributed to an increase in patient accrual on their kidney transplants wait lists. Dr. Naqvi is the lead transplant nephrologist at this clinic.

Dr. Naqvi received her MBBS from Agha Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan in 2004. She performed a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Naqvi is certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has contributed to several publications in the field of nephrology.
