Kidney chat: Ask a caregiver

Learning you need to start dialysis may be overwhelming. There is a lot to think about when choosing the best treatment option for you. Starting dialysis also means creating a new normal for yourself and your loved ones. While you adjust to regular treatments and change your eating habits, you may also have to rely on friends or family members for help with getting to appointments, doing in-home treatments and other daily activities. Knowing what to expect can help you adjust.

During this webinar, Frances Ashe-Goines, will answer questions that you have about:

  • Adjusting to the first 30 days of dialysis and beyond
  • How caregivers can prepare when a loved one is starting dialysis
  • Important questions to ask your dialysis treatment team

Frances Ashe-Goins is a mom and was previously caregiver for her daughter who lived with kidney failure for more than 20 years. Though she is a registered nurse and health educator, “mom mode” kicked in when she learned her daughter had an issue with her kidneys. Twenty-nine years later, she is passionate about sharing her experiences with other caregivers and people on dialysis so that they know that they are not alone.

Today, Frances sits on the AKF Board of Trustees. She is an active member of AKF’s Advocacy Network and was a featured speaker at AKF’s 2019 Congressional briefing on Capitol Hill. As a public health expert with years of experience, she is also an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing and Arnold School of Public Health, and a health consultant with expertise in nursing, minority health and public health issues.
