Choosing the right treatment method- exploring home options

Kidney patients have choices when it comes to their dialysis treatment. Each treatment type is unique, and all patients should have a basic understanding of their options in order to choose a treatment type that will offer them the best quality of life.

Choosing a treatment type is something not only new patients may experience, but also those who are currently on dialysis and open to trying a different treatment type.

The goal of this webinar is to discuss all treatment options with a focus on peritoneal and home hemodialysis; two treatment options that are much less common in the United States compared to other developed countries. At the end of this webinar, attendees should be more familiar with home treatment options and what a patient should consider when identifying a treatment option that best fits their lifestyle.

The webinar will cover:

  1. The importance of goal setting when choosing a dialysis treatment option.
  2. Hemodialysis, including home hemodialysis, and why someone should consider choosing it.
  3. Peritoneal dialysis and why someone should consider choosing it.

Erick Smith

Erick Smith is a PATHfinder for Satellite Health in the Greater Sacramento Area. His educational background is in Exercise Physiology. Since college, his professional career has primarily been in the acute in-patient hospital setting. This has included roles such as a Lift Technician, Exercise Physiologist, Director of Patient Experience, and now a PATHfinder for Satellite Healthcare.

Erick has worked with patients of varying ages with various diseases. During this time he has witnessed and has known many people who have had trouble navigating the changes and challenges of health care. He recognizes that when people are sick, stressed or entering an unfamiliar situation, it can be difficult to listen and follow instructions. Especially in the medical field, there are words, acronyms, and medical terminology that can make a patient feel lost. This feeling can increase a patient’s stress and make it more difficult for them to comply with recommendations made by their medical team. One of Erick’s greatest joys is helping to remove those barriers.
