Living donor protections can save the lives of DC residents

Dear [FIRST],

We know that living organ donation saves lives, and DC Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie just filed B25-0747, the Living Donor Protection Amendment Act of 2024, to ensure that living donors have access to life, long-term care and disability insurance without discrimination. Will you contact your council members and encourage them to support this legislation?

Over 103,000people across the country are waiting for an organ transplant, and every day, 13 members of the kidney disease community die waiting for a kidney. There are 1,372 Washingtonians on the organ transplant waiting list, and over 1,100 – or 81 percent of them - are waiting for a kidney.

We must reduce the barriers people face in becoming living organ donors and support those who give the gift of life. Here in the district, insurers are not prohibited from changing or denying life, long-term care and disability coverage to people because of their status as a living organ donor.

People should not lose their coverage or pay higher premiums just because they donated an organ. Will you email your councilmembers and ask them to support the DC Living Donor Protection Amendment Act of 2024?
