Safety Net Grant Program

Our Safety Net Grant Program provides grants to help people with health care expenses that are not covered by insurance. Typical expenses include the cost of transportation to and from dialysis, over-the-counter medicines, co-payments and other needs, for example, a blood pressure cuff or diabetes test strips.

If you are a kidney patient, you probably have many health care expenses that are not covered by insurance. Typical expenses include the cost of transportation to and from dialysis, over-the-counter medicines, co-payments and other needs.

Kidney donors also may have out-of-pocket expenses related to giving the gift of life. These expenses often include the cost of travel and lodging, or the expense of lost wages during the transplant process.

Safety Net and Safety Net DMV are grant programs offered by AKF as financial assistance to both dialysis and transplant patients.

In most U.S. states or U.S. territories, the amount is $200 a year or every 365 days.

These grants can help offset the cost of patients' ordinary expenses related to their kidney disease such as transportation (to and from dialysis and medical appointments), prescription medication and co-pays, medical supplies/equipment, food, utilities, etc. AKF offers patients convenient, flexible, and secure payment methods for them to receive their grants.

These payment methods include debit cards and direct deposit.

For  more information about applying for a Safety Net grant, speak with the social worker at your dialysis center today or give AKF a call at 800.795.3226.  If you already have an account in GMS (Grants Management System), you can find out more in the information section.

Help Patients Through Emergencies

From missing work for treatment to receiving unexpected medical bills, kidney patients often face impossible choices. An AKF Safety Net Grant can cover gas for getting to dialysis, co-pays for medication or kidney-friendly meals. Please donate to make this lifeline possible.

I witnessed my mom's time on dialysis, and the cost and logistical challenges, paired with the physicals toll on her, inspired me to try to become involved with AKF.
